The Smalls are a very active and generous family, Matt earned his Eagle Scout in 2019, and he helped build a BBQ pit for the Levittown Rescue Squad. Matt has been in the critical care unit since December 31st and he will likely remain in Ireland for up to 6 months. The mounting bills between car rentals, gas, and trying to keep ahead of the daily expenses and maintaining everything back here are beginning to take their toll and that's before any medical bills begin to come in. As of today, I talked with his Mom (Sandra) the infection is responding to the antibiotics, however, he is still on the ventilator and dialysis. He was placed on a ventilator, and days later his kidneys began to fail to make matters worse, Matt has Heart Tissue damage from the combination of infections. He had started out with a common cold then it went into Pneumonia and then contracted Influenza-A. During their visit, on December 31st, Matt became critically ill. The Small family went on holiday to visit family in Ireland. Some could say I've known the boys ever since they were knee-high to a grasshopper. Hi, my name is Michele Spadaccino, I have known Sandra, Greg, Matthew, and Mark for 18 years. ![]() ![]() I do, however, believe in dangerous stories: the kind that swirl up from inside you when you least expect it, like the voice of a mad angel whispering of the revolution you are about to unleash. I can’t introduce the book any better than it introduces itself: The subtitle, A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir, is only the first clue that you are about to read a mind-blowing breakdown of genre and gender. ![]() (By the way, I also loved Kai Cheng Thom’s debut poetry collection, A Place Called No Homeland, so you can count me among her top fans now, eagerly awaiting whatever she does next).įierce Femmes is a funny, dark, innovative story that completely takes apart the genre of the trans memoir. But debut novel Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars by Kai Cheng Thom is one of those books. ![]() ![]() ![]() There aren’t many books in my lifetime that I’ve read that I would truly consider a work of genius, the kind of book that feels timeless and like it should be read and discussed far into the future and that is really doing something unique and ground-breaking. ![]() ![]() ![]() Veronika is stucked between life and death, sanity and madness. ![]() Her heart had suffered irreversible damage. When she awakens from her coma, the doctor said she has only a few days to live. ![]() She ends up in Villete, a famous hospital for the mentally ill. Downing four packets of sleeping pills, she slips into a slow and painful death, but she did not die. She has a family that loves her, friends who support her, and has a steady job at the library in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Veronika, young at the age of 24, is suicidal but she has no reason to take her own life. To quote Coelho, he said this: “I have always believed that in the lives of individuals, just as in society at large, the profoundest changes take place within a very reduced time frame.” This is exactly what happened in the story of this girl. Veronika, like the other two books, is concerned with a week in the life of ordinary people who are suddenly confronted with love, death and power. The first book is By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept (1994) and the concluding one which is The Devil and Miss Prym (2000). Veronika Decides to Die (1998) is one of the three books in the trilogy And on the Seventh Day. I liked this one a lot more than the last two I read: The Alchemist and Like the Flowing River. ![]() I have finished reading yet another book, Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho. ![]() ![]() There should be willingness of the leaders, who are involved in this kind of contract with citizens, to ensure adequate provision of the basic needs and security for the citizens. Incidentally, Rousseau’s ideas have been found relevant such that this paper recommends for its application to governance or administration of modern states. Rousseau argues that property had to be controlled by the General Will which was the universal law that regained man’s freedom and liberty in the civil society. ![]() ![]() He considered property as the root cause of moral corruption and injustice which made the individual to loose his freedom. Rousseau’s state of nature initially guaranteed freedom and good life for the individuals until the institution of private property ushered injustices that called for an organized or civil society mainly to protect lives and property. It is found that the social contract theorists traced the origin of the state to a social contract by individuals after an experience from the state of nature. ![]() This paper evaluates the social contract theory from the view point of Jean Jacques Rousseau and applies the relevance to contemporary society. ![]() ![]() Wells, “ The Stolen Body” (originally published in The Strand Magazine in 1898 reprinted in Weird Tales in November 1925) ![]() “What’s the idea of that?” he added curiously. “Cielo, what an enormous crystal globe, Filippo!” exclaimed Dottore Giuseppe del Giovine, regarding the great inverted glass bell that hung over the professor’s dissecting table. But of course this is just scratching the surface, so leave your own favorites (with links if you’ve got ’em!) in the comments. To celebrate the centennial of the first issue of Weird Tales, here are a few classic stories from the magazine’s glory days that are available to read right now. The modern iteration has been publishing “more or less continuously,” as its editors put it, albeit with several changes in leadership and format, since 1988, which is probably why its new (unofficial) subtitle is “ The Magazine that Never Dies.” The first run of Weird Tales ended in 1954, and since then, much like Dracula, the magazine has been revived, killed, and revived again many times. Howard built up Conan the Barbarian, and that an entire style of literature was flexed and honed and shared. ![]() Lovecraft first published his Cthulhu stories, that Robert E. Subtitled “The Unique Magazine,” it was, as the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction puts it, “the first pulp magazine to specialize in supernatural and occult fiction,” including horror, fantasy, science fiction, and everything else, well, weird. ![]() ![]() A century ago, on February 18, 1923, the first issue of Weird Tales appeared on American newsstands. ![]() ![]() ![]() When Dee turns eighteen it becomes hers, but until then it is in the hands of Cap Wells and her First Mate, North. She is the daughter of a famous pilot who previously owned Peacetowne. But here, with Tyson Hesse’s Diesel, there is a promising adventure-slash-steampunk comic that will appeal to both sexes, especially female teens as the protagonist is a feisty seventeen year old girl.ĭee Diesel lives aboard a flying ship/town called Peacetowne. Yes, admittedly it’s getting easier but generally recommendations tend to fall into the ‘real life’ genre. But girls? Wow, pulling recommendations out is far more difficult. Usually I keep talking until their eyes glaze over. Actually, I do – to give them a small number of comics. ![]() When asked by teen boys to recommend a comic book, I never struggle. Publisher: BOOM!
